Maia Larson
Untitled, 2010. Word Collage (18" x 24")
For this piece I was interested in exploring Transgression.

  1. The image critiqued here demonstrated the concept of Transgression. Transgression is a form of convergent art that defies a rule, principle, or certain rule. In the artwork by Maia, the artist titles the piece “the unhappy man, seized by the tentacle, and attached to the suckers, was balanced in the air at the caprice of this enormous mollusc”. Both the title and the artwork display the same understanding of the image presented. The artist violated the general rule of using words, that is, instead of reading in order to comprehend, the artists rearranged the words to create an image. This image presented the same understanding of what the artist is trying to convey. Moreover, the artist placed the word image in a picture frame, which is an approach taken to display pictures.
By looking at the artwork, a person can determine that the artist thoroughly comprehended and carefully utilized the concept of transgression. The artwork overall is very appealing and detailed in its presentation.
