(Swiee, Niya, Melissa) The first composition is opened by the diagonal line on the far right. It is somewhat balanced, but doesn't have a clear focal point. It's unified by repetition of shape and proximity. Swiee feels that the second composition has a bit too much white space in the upper left corner, which causes it be be less balanced. We as a group find that the largest circle is a focal point. This composition is closed, and unified by repetition of shape and proximity. The third composition is dense and busy. It is balanced and very full, unified by repetition of shape and angles, and proximity. It is a closed composition. There is consistency and symmetry in the repetition of simple, single lines separating the shapes in the fourth composition, which unifies it. It is fairly balanced. The largest shape is likely a focal point.
This blog has been created as a space to post and critique project examples from our class. ART 111 "Introduction to the Studio" is a beginning level studio course designed to introduce and ground students in core principles of art making in a rigorous, hands on studio. These principles will be taught through a series of practical exercises using traditional and digital tools. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills, knowledge of materials, methods of observation and translation, collaboration, discussion, and creative discipline.
